23 Ayahs that prove we must follow the Sunnah and not just the Quran

‘Quranists’ are a cult that claim to be muslim, who are upon the belief that muslims should only follow the Quran and reject anything from the Sunnah. This is very wrong and clearly shows that they have not properly read the Quran itself.

It is important to read the Quran and understand it, and it is just as important to know how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived according to it. Knowledge must be taken from both Quran and Sunnah.

Here are 23 ayahs from the Quran that command us to follow the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.

1. Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
#Quran 3:31

2. Say, “Obey Allah and the Messenger.” But if they turn away – then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.

#Quran 3:32

3. Say, “Obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.
#Quran 3:132

4. …and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted by Him to gardens [in Paradise] under which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment.
#Quran 4:13

5. O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger…
#Quran 4:59

6. We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah…
#Quran 4:64

7. And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous
#Quran 4:69

8. He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away – We have not sent you over them as a guardian.
#Quran 4:80

9. And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and beware. And if you turn away – then know that upon Our Messenger is only [the responsibility for] clear notification.
#Quran 5:92

10. So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
#Quran 8:1

11. O you who have believed, obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
#Quran 8:20

12. And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
#Quran 8:46

13. …They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger…
#Quran 9:71

14. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger and fears Allah and is conscious of Him – it is those who are the attainers.
#Quran 24:52

15. Say, “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away – then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged…
#Quran 25:54

16. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger – that you may receive mercy.
#Quran 25:56

17. There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
#Quran 33:21

18. …And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
#Quran 33:33

19. …And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
#Quran 33:71

20. O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
#Quran 47:33

21. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger – He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away – He will punish him with a painful punishment.
#Quran 48:17

22. …And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
#Quran 59:7

23. And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away – then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of] clear notification.
#Quran 64:12

Many who argue that the Quran should be the only source and that muslims should reject hadith, fail to take these ayahs of the Quran into consideration.

Some may use the arguement that in the specified ayahs, the term ‘the Messenger’ is the Quran, but how can ‘the Messenger’ be the Quran, if Allah tells us to obey Allah AND His Messenger, isn’t the word of Allah the Quran itself?

Allah commands us to follow the Sunnah, so anyone that rejects Sunnah, is essentially rejecting the Quran. It’s as simple as that.

May Allah help us to follow the Quran and the Sunnah and enable us to act upon them.
