Does it break the fast?

A list of things to help you understand what does and what does not break your fast

Smelling or applying liquid based perfumes or incense – DOES NOT break the fast

Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymin and Shaykh Ibn Bāz

The condition: It is permissible to smell incense in a room or elsewhere as long as you do not inhale and ingest it.

Nose and mouth bleed – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Swallowing blood should be avoided

Blood test – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Unless the extraction of blood equates to the same amount of blood extracted from cupping or transferring blood

Using an asthma inhaler – DOES NOT break the fast

Removing a tooth – DOES NOT break the fast

Nose drops – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Unless taste of drops reaches the throat or stomach

Nose bleeds – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Unless the cause of bleeding happens intentionally

Tasting food – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: It is permissible for the one preparing the meal to taste the food using the tip of the tongue whilst taking precaution in not swallowing anything

Using toothpaste or mouthwash – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: However it is preferable to avoid using strong toothpaste or mouthwash as the mey enter the throat.

Lying, swearing or using bad speech – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Nonetheless using bad speech reduces the reward of fasting

Wet dreams or waking up from junūb from relations the night before – DOES NOT break the fast

Vomiting – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Unless vomiting happens intentinoally

Kissing and hugging – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: This is only allowed if it does not lead to sexual arousal. The emission of prostatic fluid does not break the fast unless resulted in ejaculation

Cutting the hair or trimming the nails – DOES NOT break the fast

Having a shower or bath – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: If the person swallows water unintentionally, the fast is still valid and he doesn’t have to make up the fast – Ibn Bāz

Swimming or diving into water – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Nonetheless, it is disliked to swim whilst fasting, esecially in sea water – Shaykh Muqbil

Apply henna – DOES NOT break the fast

Anaesthetic Injection – DOES NOT break the fast

Using cosmetics or make-up – DOES NOT break the fast

Eye drops – DOES NOT break the fast

The condition: Doesn’t break the fast even if taste of drops reaches the throat.

Masturbation – DOES break the fast

The condition: If the person doesn’t ejaculate the he needs to repent from the sin of masturbating, however the fast is still valid

Sexual relations – DOES break the fast

Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymin

Intentionally eating or drinking – DOES break the fast

Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymin

The condition: Unless eating or drinking happens unintentionally

Nutritional Injections – DOES break the fast

Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymin

The condition: Nutritional Injections are considered similar to food

Cupping/hijama – DOES break the fast

Fatwa by: The Permanent Comittee of Major Scholars

The condition: The Prophet ﷺ said; ‘A man who cups and a man who gets himself cupped break their fast.’ [Sunan Abi Dawud 2370, Graded Sahih]
