The Virtues of Fasting in The Month of Shawwal

Fasting six days of Shawwaal after the obligatory fast of Ramadaan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not waajib. It is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwaal, and in this there is great virtue and an immense reward.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari رضي الله عنه narrated that :
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting everyday.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 13, Hadith 264]

The Six fasts during Shawwal must be done after making up for any missed fasts in Ramadan, as the fasts during Ramadan are obligatory, where as fasts during Shawwal are Sunnah.

To gain extra reward, you could also perform your Shawwal fasts on Mondays and Thurdays of that month.

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that:
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.”

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 8, Hadith 66]
