Zakat FAQs

Zakat is obligatory on a person who is Muslim, sane, adult, and free, and who owns wealth equal to or above the nisab after meeting their basic needs. The wealth must stay at or above this amount for one lunar year.

Zakat applies to cash or savings, gold, silver, and business goods or trade inventory. If the total value of these assets reaches the nisab amount, Zakat becomes obligatory.

A person who meets the nisab requirement must give one-fortieth (1/40) of their wealth, which equals 2.5%, as Zakat.

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory.

If a person only owns gold (and no other zakatable wealth), the nisab is 7.5 tolas of gold.

The nisab for silver is 52.5 tolas of silver.

If a person has cash or business goods equal to the value of 52.5 tolas of silver, they have reached the nisab and must pay Zakat.

Different types of wealth such as cash, gold, silver, and trade goods are combined. If their total value equals or exceeds the silver nisab, Zakat becomes obligatory.

Basic necessities (essential needs) are not included when calculating Zakat. These include the house you live in, personal vehicle, clothing, food, household items, and personal devices such as a mobile phone or laptop.

Zakat becomes due when a person owns wealth equal to or above the nisab for one full lunar year.
