The Six Conditions of Salah (Shurut as-Salah)
The Prerequisites for Standing Before Allah
Before a believer even utters "Allahu Akbar," the foundation of the prayer must be established. These six conditions (Shurut) are the keys to a valid Salah. If any of them are missing without a valid, textually supported excuse, the prayer is not accepted.
Let us examine these conditions strictly through the lens of the Quran and authentic Sunnah, specifically addressing the areas where later schools of thought (like the Hanafi madhab) introduced specific caveats.
1. The Time Window (Waqt)
Every prayer has a divinely appointed time. Praying before the time enters is invalid, and delaying it until the time exits (without a valid excuse like sleep or forgetfulness) is a major sin.
The Evidence: Allah declares, "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." (Surah An-Nisa, 4:103).
2. Ritual Purity (Wudu/Ghusl)
You must be free from both minor impurity (Hadath, requiring Wudu) and major impurity (Janabah, requiring Ghusl).
The Evidence: The Prophet ﷺ said: "The prayer of none of you will be accepted if he happens to be in a state of impurity until he performs Wudu." (Sahih Muslim, 224).
3. Physical Purity (Taharat al-Khabath)
Your body, your clothing, and the spot where you pray must be free from physical impurities (Najasah), such as urine or stool.
The Evidence: Allah commands: "And your clothing purify." (Surah Al-Muddaththir, 74:4).
4. Covering the 'Awrah (The Intimate Parts)
The boundaries of what must be covered differ for men and women.
-
For Men:
The area from the navel to the knee must be covered.
The Evidence: The Prophet ﷺ said: "The thigh is 'Awrah." (الفَخِذُ عَوْرَةٌ) (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2795; Graded Authentic). -
For Women:
The entire body must be covered except for the face and hands. The Debate (Regarding the Feet): The Hanafi school states that a woman's feet are not 'Awrah and do not need to be covered during prayer. However, when we look at the direct Sunnah, we find a different standard. The Evidence for Covering the Feet: Umm Salama (the wife of the Prophet) was asked what clothes a woman should pray in. She replied: "In a veil (Khimar) and a long flowing garment (Dir') that covers the tops of her feet." (Sunan Abi Dawud, 640).The Perspective: Based on this, the majority of scholars outside the Hanafi school say that covering the feet is obligatory. To be safe and adhere closest to the textual evidence, a woman should ensure her garment covers her feet while praying.
5. Facing the Qiblah
You must face the direction of the Ka'bah in Makkah.
The Evidence: Allah commands: "...So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:144).
You correctly noted that we should not fall into obsessive doubt about the exact degree. This is not just a "Hanafi" law; it is explicitly established by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
The Evidence: The Prophet ﷺ said (regarding those living north/south of Makkah): "Whatever is between the east and the west is the Qiblah." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 342).
The Perspective: As long as you are facing the general direction, your Salah is perfectly valid. Do not let Waswasa (doubt) ruin your focus.
6. The Intention (Niyyah)
You must know in your heart which specific prayer you are performing (e.g., Fard of Dhuhr, Sunnah of Fajr) right as you begin.
- The Claim: Some scholars say saying it aloud is permitted to help focus.
- The Evidence-Based Perspective: The Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, and the early generations never uttered their intentions for Salah aloud (e.g., saying, "I intend to pray 4 Rak'ahs of Dhuhr...").
-
The Reference: The Prophet ﷺ established the golden rule: "Verily, actions are judged by intentions [which reside in the heart]." (Sahih Bukhari, 1).
- The Conclusion: Because the Prophet ﷺ never did it, uttering the intention aloud is considered an innovation (Bid'ah) by scholars of Hadith. The heart is the sole place of the intention; simply knowing what you are standing up to pray is 100% sufficient.
